Playing with Rice
How: Take a kilogram of rice and allow your child to investigate it with different containers. Include containers of different shapes, sizes and materials.
Why: Using rice with different containers allows children to work with a substances other than water and sand. They can investigate the following:
- transferring rice using containers or hands
- pouring rice
- filling different sized containers
- feeling the texture of rice
- finding the different sounds rice makes when poured on different surfaces
- taste of raw rice
- smell of rice
- examining rice close up with eyes
- manipulate single grains of rice
Still not convinced: I don't really like sand so rice is a nice compromise and sand can be something we play with when we are at the beach. Rice can be reused if you place a sheet or sarong underneath to collect stray grains.
Great idea
