Key Skills
Before kids go to school they need to be able to do the following things. Obviously they don't all happen at once! I have listed some ways to work towards the following skills.
- getting dressed
- getting undressed
- washing hands
- feeding by self
- knowing when to go to the toilet
- knowing how to clean up after going to the toilet
- wiping up mess
- putting items in the bin
- sweeping
Start early on by describing what you are doing when you are helping your child with the above skills. For example when you are dressing your child keep up a monologue of to describe whats happening. Here's how it could go
"We are going to get dressed now. here is your tee-shirt its a pink tea-shirt can you see the cat? OK the shirt is over your head now its time for your arms. One arms through, next arm through. Now lets pull it over your tummy. That's your tee-shirt on now. Time to put on your pants. your pants have stripes on . one leg in, second leg in. OK stand up and hold on to Mummy. Now you are all done!"
